Length: 9.4 km/3.5 miles

Weather: Damp and grey.

 

Another walk from the book, Exploring the Elizabeth Line by Jeff Lock. I travelled on the Elizabeth Line from Acton Main Line station to Tottenham Court Road and it took about 10 minutes, which is ridiculous really.

 

I came out of the Dean Street station exit, where Soho Square is a short walk away.

The route takes you over Charing Cross Road, up Flitcroft Street, through the grounds of St. Giles-in-the-Fields, across Shaftesbury Avenue, to Seven Dials.

I walked through Covent Garden, along Russell Street and across Drury Lane, where the Theatre Royal Drury Lane is showing Frozen .

The London School of Economics (LSE) in Sardinia Street. Famous alumni include Mick Jagger and Robert Elms. In 1935 John F Kennedy filled in an admission application form and paid the fees to attend the LSE, but didn't take a class.

Lincoln's Inn was not open to the public today so I had to continue my walk down Searle Street and then left along Carey Street.

The Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand.

The Temple Bar Memorial marks the place where Wren's Temple Bar used to stand, as the ceremonial entrance to the City of London from Westminster. The bronze free-standing statues are of Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, facing the road on each side.

Milford Lane, leading to the Victoria Embankment.

These dragons stand either side of the Victoria Embankment, marking the boundary of the City with Westminster. Dragon figures now mark the boundary of the City of London on all roads approaching the City of London but that idea only goes back to the 1960s.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese was rebuilt shortly after the Great Fire of 1666, the pub is known for its literary associations, with its regular patrons having included Charles Dickens, G.K. Chesterton and Mark Twain.

Dr Johnson's House in Gough Square. Him of the dictionary notoriety and immortalised in Blackadder, "SAUGAGE!! ... SAUSAGE!!".

Back to the Elizabeth Line at Farringdon and it only took me about 13 minutes to get back to Acton Main Line!
